SA-Botswana – day 6

SA-Botswana – day 6

We left Polokwane rather early as we had another longish drive. Below you will find some pics that I took during the drive. To give you an idea what you see along the road. We stopped in a little village to get something to eat and to go to an Outdoor-shop. When we parked there a young man walked by who looked bad. Not evil, but he looked like he had a hard time. No shoes, torn clothes. Our very nice mentor bought him socks and a t-shirt and gave him something to eat. Thank you so much for that!!!!!
There was a butcher close by where you could see the skins that they obviously sell as well. The outdoor-shop made some money on us because we found really nice things there. I bought a jacket that is going to replace my rain jacket at home. Generally South Africa is much cheaper than prices at home. Where can you still eat a filet steak for 10 Euro or drink a glass of wine for 3 Euro? So it was fun to do a bit of shopping.

Then we continued to a farm close to the border to Botswana. Along the road we saw a farm called Helena and that got my attention as one of my family members bears this name. This farm was HUGE. We drove through it (public road but the farm was on both sides) for at least 10 kilometers. Unfortunately it is a hunting farm so we saw special animals like black impalas. Generally they don’t exist but if they raise special ‚forms‘ of animals they can make it more expensive to shoot them.

Arrived at the farm we waited for our car to Botswana. Since the road to Serolo Camp is not a very good one it was better to leave our rental car in South Africa. SK who was our guide the entire time in Botswana came with the jeep to get us. At the border it was the following procedure:
– get out of the car, go into the building and get your exit stamp for South Africa in the passport
– get all your shoes from your luggage and desinfect them
– get back in the car
– drive under the barrier (which has been opened of course 😉 )
– get out of the car, go into the building and get your entry stamp for Botswana

From there we continued to Serolo Camp. Along the way we saw a few animals but not many. Upon arrival we got the first food cooked by the phantastic cook Kennedy (he is funny as well 🙂 ). Then we got our rooms assigned and we went on our first game drive with SK. Close to the camp we found two you male lions who were resting so we could spend some time taking pics of them. Then we had zebras, kudus and wildebeests. After sunset it was back to the resort. Another three course meal waiting for us. Unfortunately I can’t really eat that much. But it was good!
