SA-Botswana – day 7
This was our first full day in Botswana. In Botswana the camps are not fenced in. So the guys accompanied us to our rooms after dark. After a short breakfast (not for me as I don’t eat at home – just a bit of coffee 😉 ) we went on the morning game drive. That morning our mentor’s lifelong dream came true because we found rare brown hyenas. First there was only one lying in the sun. We had already turned around and started to drive away when one of the group saw a second one coming up. And that was obviously a kid. We stayed longer and saw the second one nursing. So the first one obviously was the mom. We drove into a valley with a dry riverbed. Along the way we saw a lot of animals. On the way back to the camp we came across elephants on the road in front of us. We stopped to wait until they had headed on. What we initially had not seen was that part of that herd was behind us. SK wanted to drive by rather early but one of the teenagers in front of us thought he needed a nap and he got down partly on the road. So we were stuck. Two elephants were not too far away from us and they started to get nervous. To worsen the situation the elephants behind us were coming as well. So we didn’t really have a choice. I know that SK was calm as he is used to elephants and knows their behaviour but I was far from calm. The elephants made a lot of noise at us and they were doing their (obviously) usual threatening behavior. Worked on me…. 😉 😀 I was more than glad when we were through and they were behind us. They are wonderful animals but I have a high respect for them.
We thought we were going back to the camp for brunch but the guys had a surprise for us. Kennedy and the others had set up the early lunch along a river. There were portable sinks where we could wash our hands and food was phantastic again. But eating along a river is very special so it was really nice for them to do this for us. Before the afternoon game drive there was a short snack again and during the game drive some animals. 😀 Dinner with creme brulee after the game drive… and then sleep.
