Iceland 26 – day 5
We had planned two days in the Vik-area. The next morning we were ready for Reynisfjara. This is the most dangerous beach in Iceland. Too many people go too close to the water. Usually there are warning signs all over the place but even if they are there people just ignore them. How stupid can you be? People have died there. There are the sneaker waves that are the dangerous ones. You don’t see them coming and I have seen lots if people run and get wet. Last winter has taken away a lot of sand and in January there was a earth slide that took away part of the rocks next to the caves. All over it is no longer possible to climb the basalt rocks or go into the caves. We were there earlier than a lot of other tourist and while we saw a few go down to the beach (they got wet!) but not a lot so for us photographers it was nice because we could take pics without people on them. And we had some really great light even though we were not there for sunrise. So we spent some time there. Btw. I read that two weeks ago at least one of the sneaker waves got into the parking lot… the beach is really changing.
After we finally had enough (the later it got the more people were there and the more went down to the water)… we went back over to Dyrholaey. First we stopped to take pics of the frozen lagoon again and then we went up the hill. On top is a nice lighthouse but I hurried because I saw the rain coming. It was impressive up there because the ocean was in uproar (that was most of the time when we were there). There are two parking lots with walking paths, one is on top of the hill, the other one is a bit lower with a view over the beach that ends in Reynisfjara. I would have liked to walk more in the lower area but unfortunately my legs didn’t really want to do that. So I still took some pics but a bit less than I would have liked to.
After that we went to the other side of Vik along the Ring road. There is a cave called Yoda-cave because looking out of it it really has that shape. We went there but didn’t go in because too many people. We preferred to go to less frequented places. So we continued on that ’side street‘ and went into a valley that leads to the phantastic highland. Which is closed during winter. But I sent up my drone and took some really nice pics. After that we went back to our cabins. Sorry but my pics are not entirely in the correct chronological order… 🙂
