Iceland 26 – day 1
I had planned to go the Greenland in March but finally I decided to postpone this to summer of next year. But I had already booked the flight to Iceland (from where you take the flight over to East-Greenland) and had plans to go with a friend for a few days. So with Greenland cancelled the plans for Iceland changed as well and instead of being 4 days in Iceland the plan became 16 days. I took the taxi to the airport in Düsseldorf again and flew to Copenhagen. Slept there one night and continued the next morning to Keflavik. I had a window seat and could already see Jokulsarlon lagoon and Diamond Beach from above (and Fjallsarlon).
In Keflavik my friend was waiting for me. She had already got a car. There had been an issue with the one we had actually rented but since it was in the middle of the night she got a different car (a better one 😉 ). We called the car ‚Helga‘. No specific reason for that name but Helga became a good friend. 😀
After arrival we first went to the supermarket to get some supplies. We had rented cabins for most of the time so we needed groceries.
And then we were off towards Snaefellsness peninsula. First stop was for Brautarholtskirkja. One black church is very famous in Iceland but it is not that one. Behind the church you can still see Halgrimskirkja in Reykjavik. But with the small black church we had our first photo session. On the way there we found some interesting lost places – fotostop again. 😉
In Borgarnes are several gas stations and we went to have a coffee. I had known the ‚kaffi‘ in the gas station but not the one close to the water where we actually went. My love to icelandic pastries started to bloom there even more than it had already… 😉 Then we continued on to the pass on street 56. I had been on that street before but it looked different now. Lakes frozen and the landscape snow covered. There is a parking space which usually has a wonderful view over a small lake. I sent up the drone but you hardly see the lake on the pic. It is all white.
From there we continued to go to our cabins in Helgafell. Helgafell is a ‚village‘ of about 5 houses. Plus the cabins we had rented. They were nice cabins. We unloaded the car and then went on another trip for sunset. Since the sun was already going behind the mountains we stayed at the lake that was in front of our cabins and then went to Stykkisholmur where they have a special church. I was dead on my feet then. My friend stayed awake and saw northern lights over Helgafell but I slept without seeing them.
