Niue 4
Monday I didn’t go out with the whales but went diving instead. Don’t have any pics of that since I didn’t bring an underwater flash so the pics wouldn’t have been good enough (at least not for me 😉 ). My pics are not necessarily in chronological order as I took them with 2 cameras, my mobile and my drone. They all have different numbering and the only device being on the correct date and time was the mobile. So it is a bit difficult to keep them in order. But who cares? 😉 The next days I went in with the whales again and finally my pics started to get better. We were lucky to come across a mom with a calf and an escort. The escort stayed down much longer than the other two. The baby was constantly moving. Which is necessary as it needs to get stronger. The mom every now and then would go up to it, swim a circle and come back to the escort. It was like she wanted to show off her baby to us because the went down and swam below us with the baby. We stayed with them for one hour each day. After that we had to get out of the water because that is one of the rules in Niue. The other rules are that not more than 6 persons plus guide are allowed in the water and only one boat at any given time. Niue Blue is a very good dive shop with a phantastic team. Some guides are out of the water and are on the look out along the coast. So when you are on the boat you usually get tips from the guys on the look out where to go. They are higher up on the ground so for them it is easier to spot the whales. So- kudos to them for doing this work!
Our tour leader Roland gave me some hints on Photoshop-editing and he showed me how to convert them to black and white. I had never thought about converting whale-pics to black and white but doing that now – I feel a certain appeal. Although usually I am a color-person. The more colorful the better… 😉 And then one evening when we came back from dinner we looked up in the parking lot and saw all those stars. Easy to just say ‚Let’s go and get cameras to take pics of the milky way‘. Which is what we did. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my tripod on that trip so most of my pics are not the best ones. But at least I have pics of the Southern Cross. Being from the northern hemisphere we had problems identifying it. But in the end we DID find it 🙂
