Niue 1

So early the next morning I went to the airport. Check In and then time to wait. Breakfast with a chocolate bar and coffee from a convenience store. 😀 And then it was time to meet at the gate with the entire group and depart for the 3.5 hour flight to Niue. Since we flew over the dateline a lot of things are confused by going back a day in 3.5 hours. 😉

Once we had landed we had to go through customs and got our luggage. Before going to the hotel we bought traveller SIM cards for our mobile phones as Niue doesn’t have any roaming. So we didn’t have any connectivity around the island and the WIFI at the hotel doesn’t work everywhere. The SIM card (which was not really expensive and valid for the two weeks we were there) solved that issue.

Arrived at the hotel we were assigned our rooms (and I fell in love with it immediately) with view to the ocean. Which meant – we saw the humpbacks a lot. And we could hear them at night as well. That alone was a wonderful experience. We went over Niue Blue later – that is the dive shop we did our whale snorkelling tours with to check in with them as well. That day we had dinner at the hotel. They have live music all evenings but that is not necessarily something you would like all the time.
On saturday morning we got up early, had breakfast and headed over to Niue Blue for the first day of snorkelling. We met Roxy and Ant who were our guides for the next two weeks most of the time. First day was really good already – I had to get used to my new UW-photo-equipment first so I have some whale pics but I knew I could do better. 😉 Don’t remember what we did in the afternoon (probably nothing) and in the evening we went to one of the local restaurants. The local restaurants are all good. But they are usually small and even if they have official opening hours that doesn’t mean that they are actually open then. 😉 Choices are usually limited as well but that is mostly due to the fact that Niue is a very remote island.
