Iceland 26 – day 7
The next morning we continued our trip east. We had planned to go farther up than we both had been, stay two nights and then turn around and go back towards Reykjavik. The weather forecast was not very good though. It was supposed to be very windy on day 8 and day 9 the forecast said lots of snow. So while driving we discussed if we should really go all the way or not. The tentative plan B was to stay in Höfn instead. When it is too windy to drive we could at least go to a supermarket or a restaurant. When we arrived in Höfn we stopped at Kaffi Hornid at the entrance of town where my friend had said she had eaten the best fish and chips. They were just opening for the day and we had the fish and chips. It was actually good. When paying we talked to the owner and asked about the weather. She said that she had to go the Keflavik airport the next day but she was leaving in the night to not get into the storm. That confirmed our decision to go with plan B. We had not booked the new hotel but drove over and told them that we didn’t have bookings but wanted to stay for 2 nights. That was a good idea because we got a better price than on booking.com or their website (including breakfast).
Since our rooms were not ready we drove off again. There was a waterfall that my friend wanted to go to. When we arrived there it stopped raining so we went up to the waterfall to take pics. I didn’t go really close but still got nice pics. And going back to the Ring road we saw that Batman-mountain was visible. 🙂 From there we went further east towards Eystrahorn. I had never been that far up so it was interesting. We kept stopping to take pics. There were reindeer along the road. When we arrived at the lighthouse Hvalnesviti the sea was still very angry. The Hvalnes nature reserve lagoon was frozen and lots of birds on it. On the way back we stopped to take pics at the bridge at Stafafell. A car passed, then turned around and came back. I asked the driver if we had done something we were not supposed to (you never know… 😀 ) but he said he didn’t speak english. Then he asked if we liked sheep. And offered to come to a farm close by for sheep. Since his english was minimal it was not really clear what exactly he had offered 😉 but it was in the wrong direction for us anyway. Then we continued to Höfn, got our rooms and waited for darkness to fall. Since it was raining and cloudy I had left my tripod in the car. But then – there were holes in the clouds and lady Aurora deigned us with her presence. I didn’t know that our car was open and I could have just taken out my tripod so I used the car as tripod. 🙂 I do have some pics but it was not a very good place to take pics at the hotel anyway. But better than nothing… 😉
