Iceland 26 – day 6
The next morning we were woken up with a lot of new snow on our terraces. Not an issue but… We left Vik to continue East on the Ringroad. Something we both knew was that you need to check the icelandic apps all the time to be informed about weather alerts or road closures. We had already kept checking them. We knew that day would be a difficult one. We started to head out and decided to stop in Kirkjubaerklaustur and decide what to do. Our plan had been to go to the Viking cafe at Vestrahorn but with the conditions on the road we decided to cancel the bookings even if it was too late to get our money back. Better be safe than sorry. We booked a new hotel that we had already booked for the way back.
After some rest at Kirkjubaerklaustur (don’t ask me to say that – but by now I might already be able to say that 😀 ) we continued. Next stop was a gas station in the Skaftafell area. You can eat A warm meal there or buy snacks and some souvenirs. I had a sandwich but was searching for the egg that I expected on top of it. 😀 Then we continued to Fjallsarlon which is my favorite place in Iceland. The glacier lagoon was frozen as well so once again it was different from the other times I have been there. We went to a less frequented parking lot. From there we went to our hotel that is about 12 km from Jokulsarlon lagoon/Diamond beach. When it was time for sunset we got into the car again (sun was shining and no clouds at our hotel) and we went back towards the lagoon. We could already see the clouds we were driving into. We went into the Diamond beach parking lot and I took some pics of the ice coming out of Jokulsarlon lagoon and go towards Diamond beach. The ice bergs were frozen and seals were playing around. After taking some pics I went to the beach but it was snowing and tide was coming in so it was not a good time to take pics. I got a message from my friend that she was back at our car so I went back because I had the key. And then our personal apocalypse started….. we hadn’t known how hard it was snowing. When we started to drive towards our hotel it was more then difficult to see the street. It was the longest 12 km of my life. There was another hotel closer by and when we were there we went into the parking lot to regroup. Only 3 km left and we finally had the courage to do it… we arrived back at our accomodation but we were done. Last time we drove in the dark with snow…
Sorry but the pics are not entirely in chronological order.
