Iceland 26 – Day 3

Iceland 26 – Day 3

This was our departure from the Snaefellsnes area. I got up early and noticed that the owner’s dog was in front of my door. We had been informed that it roamed but I hadn’t seen it before. She went on to the next cabin though and had a good welcome there. 😉 After we had packed Helga we went back to Stykkisholmur first to get gas. Since there was a geocache close to the harbor we went there and it was a good idea because the sun came out and we had a photo session there. The ferry to the West-fjords was there but no activity so it didn’t look like it was leaving soon.
After that we went back to the pass over the mountain and that was where we got our first impression of what was to come over the next days. The sun was out but it was very windy and the snow was blowing over the road. It was impressive… We stopped whenever we found a place that was worth a foto… it wasn’t that often. We stopped at the kaffi in Borgarnes again. The icelandic pastries are really good…. 😉
Shortly after that stop we took the road to Thingvellir National Park. Along the road is Mosfellskirkja whic is very unique with it’s tower. We found that the tower does not seem to be there any more. Hopefully they will rebuild it… We left the main road to a waterfall which I believe was Thorufoss (not sure if the first letter is actually a Th as it is an icelandic letter). 😉 The waterfall is supposed to be really nice – but it was frozen. And it was very windy. We took pics and below you find one and you might not recognize the waterfall. 😀

After that we continued through Thingvellir where you can snorkel between America and Europe. We stopped at a view point and the lake was frozen as well. I think snorkelling was still possible but we didn’t intend to do that. We stopped at a less frequented place later on to be closer to the frozen water. From there we went to Selfoss. Which is where we stopped for groceries but then I had to go to Kaffi Krus. This is a mandatory stop for me whenever I am in Iceland. 😉 We stopped at a shop that has local things. Nice shop! Then we continued on the Ringroad. Which is the one main road around Iceland. At the Seljalandsfoss waterfall we stopped on a road a bit further away. I wanted to fly my drone but it was dancing so much that I took it back down immediately. Then we went to our appartment for the day. It was in the middle of nowhere which in general was a nice idea. But for northern lights it wouldn’t have been ideal. We had a living area with panoramic windows and a nice view. The full moon came out and it we were waiting for northern lights since the sky was clear. But nothing… happens. 🙂
