Iceland 26 – day 2
The next morning we had breakfast in our cabins and then headed out. First to the lava fields. It is different when you go to see them in winter. Not a lot to see when everything is covered in snow. 😀 I sent the drone up to get an overview. From there we went to the shark museun. You can eat shark there. It is fermented and supposed to be smelling… we didn’t go there for that (the museum was closed anyway) but because of another black church that belonged to Bjarnahofn. We couldn’t get very close because close to the wall of the churchyard the snow must have been about 1 meter deep.
After that I could reach my goal of the day. At Grundafjordur they have built a bridge that you need to see from above. Otherwise you won’t see that it is built in the shape of a viking-sword. Fortunately we had the parking lot for yourselves so it was no problem to send the drone up. And I could see the sword. 🙂
From there we made a short stop to take pics of the famous Kirkjufell mountain which is maybe THE landmark of Iceland. Too many cars there so we headed to explore Olafsvik. Nice church, nice sign next to it. 😀 And then we had lunch in a nice restaurant. From there we continued, saw some murals passing by Hellisandur to go to Ingjaldsholl kirkja. It is one the most famous Instagram points as there is a nice long street heading up to it. We were so annoyed with some asian guys doing their fotosessions on the street (so we couldn’t take pics without them) that we walked next to them and started to take our pics. To let them know that there are other people as well who would like to take pics. 😉 We went behind the church to take pics there and that was nice as we were alone. I sent the drone up again and that was a good idea. When we left another ‚Asia express‘ (that is what we called the busses bringing all those you asian people) had just arrived so we were glad we could leave.
The goal of the day was to go to Ondverdarnesviti light house. On the way up to it we stopped at Skardsvik beach first. I wanted to take longterm exposure pics but too many people walked around there so it was difficult. The road to the lighthouse is not paved and there – for the first time during our trip – we had to change plans, We turned around when we found that there was too much snow and that it was more sensible to turn around.
On the way back we noted that in the villages streets had not been cleared of snow. The assumption is that if they clear the streets they will be too slippery for walking. It is easier to walk if there is some snow left. We went back the same way we came. Later we saw a nice sunset from the cabins.
