Greenland 2024 – 3
The next day maybe was the most intense one. The plan was a dive in the morning (not me 😉 ). Then go over to the small settlement of Tiniteqilaaq – called Tinit. It is more protected than the ice camp as it is along a fjord that connects the ice fjord with Kulusuk. And second dive in the afternoon. I didn’t go out on the dives but my drone was checking what the divers were doing. 😉 😀 And I went to the village to explore it. The inhabitants were very friendly and I greeted them all of course. What I heard is that they are not too happy if tourists come and want to take pics of them. I didn’t do that – never had the intention of doing it. If there had been a public event with them wearing traditional clothes it would have been an entirely different matter. But just for normal life – nope. When we came to the cemetery of Tinit we saw three big boxes outside of it and they are there if someone dies in winter when the ground is frozen and it is impossible to dig a grave. The bodies stay there until it is possible to burry them.
As for the village – it is very basic. There are not water toilets and not sure about electricity. So staying there is not what we are used to. Better to know that if you want to go there. 😉
In the afternoon we went out whale watching and see the ruins of a winter house. Back in the days there were families to gather and spend the winter together in the winter houses. When it got warmer they left and would spend the next winter with other families in another winter house. Unfortunately it was a bit windy so I got wet to my underwear in the zodiac. Since it was difficult to see whales in the waves we went over to a HUGE iceberg with a cool waterfall. We let our drones fly but I couldn’t get the entire iceberg on one pic. And with wind and waves it was difficult to get the drones back. Have to admit that I panicked a moment or two. But finally I was able to get hold of my drone again and land it on my hand. 🙂 I was proud of myself to master that. Wasn’t easy… 😉
